Autumn 2007

The Meriton tendered for funding from the LSC in order to be able to offer education to a greater number of young parents across the Unitary Authorities. We were successful and are working with Children's Centres to offer the NCFE Parents with Prospects course. It is a 12 week course and can lead to a Level 2 accreditation.
So far we are working in 6 centres with 45 young parents; all in addition to the young women accessing the Meriton. By June 2008 we hope to have enabled a further 60 young parents to access the courses and get onto the ladder into further education and work. What is vital is that other learning providers ensure a flexible approach to the education they offer young parents. It is important that they remember that having children can be an added barrier and that a whole support package is made available. It is frustrating for young parents to find progression routes are blocked after they have made such a huge effort.
